Now more than ever, non-profits are needing volunteers and or donations to help provide meals, resources and shelter for the local community. Here are 5 Houston non-profit organizations that I have supported throughout the years that offer great resources for our community of all ages. If you are able, please join me in helping our fellow Houstonians!
Houston Food Bank is a member of Feeding America and is a non-profit that receives meals and food items from local farmers, grocery stores and food drives. Their staff and volunteers are critical as they help inspect and distribute food items to many community centers and even churches which assist with providing meals to more than 800,000 people annually. During the COVID-19 crisis, The Houston Food Bank has partnered with Houston ISD to distribute meals to Houstonians in various locations throughout the city. The Houston Food Bank also offers great resources like job training and nutrition education. Any support helps. Even $1 can provide three meals!

You can help by volunteering and or donating any amount ($2 will feed a child). You can also get your family and friends to support by participating in the DIY Lunch Pack program where you can draw and decorate a paper bag and include a protein, a snack and a drink (Kids Meals, Inc can add a sandwich) for a child in need. Meals on Wheels is a program within the Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (a United Way agency) that delivers about 4,000 meals to home-bound seniors and disabled adults per week. Due to COVID-19, “Meals on Wheels is altering its delivery methods to ensure the safety of our seniors- delivering a week’s worth of frozen meals at a time to reduce contact, while phoning each senior regularly to check on them and provide social support”. In addition to the affects of COVID-19, staff is preparing for hurricane season (June 1st – November 30th) to provide emergency food. $14 can help support one senior with emergency food.

Due to COVID-19, hours of operations have been updated, but The Beacon continues to provide ‘Take-away meals’ seven days a week. With the help of volunteers, they are able to provide individuals with a Take-away meal which includes one hot meal and one sack lunch.
