TRAVEL GUIDES — Houston, Texas, USA

    CULTURE

Houston is more than oil, gas and NASA. Founded in 1836 by Augustus Chapman Allen and brother, John Kirby Allen, Houston has become the country’s fourth largest and most diverse city with over 140 languages spoken! Not only has it been my home for the past 30 years, it’s home to the world’s largest rodeo, baseball World Series Champions, ten thousand multi-cultural restaurants and more! To fully explore the city, you’ll need to visit its many different neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is unique and helps give Houston its ‘big city with small town’ vibes. Get ready to add ‘y’all’ to your vocab and see what Houston has to offer! Here’s the ultimate travel guide to Houston with things to do, where to stay and what to taste – perfect for visitors, new residents and locals!

    DO

From Downtown to the Museum District, you’ll definitely find some cool things to do.

    Downtown/East Downtown – farmers markets & sports

Let’s start with Downtown. She’s “different and not like the others”. You won’t see many people walking around downtown like you do in most major cities. Since the climate here varies a lot, the city has built an underground 7-mile tunnel system with restaurants and shops that people can enjoy! You can access the tunnels (only during business hours) from different buildings like the Hyatt Regency hotel and Understory Food Hall. It’s definitely a bit of a hidden gem in Houston–most locals don’t even know about it!

For outdoor activities like farmers markets, yoga, movie nights and history tours visit: Market Square Park, Discovery Green, Buffalo Bayou Park (the best view of the skyline) and The Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park. If you’re a sports fan, catch an Astros baseball game at Minute Maid Park, a Dynamo soccer game at Shell Energy Stadium or a Rockets basketball game at Toyota Center! Be sure to also check out a play at one of the theaters in the Theatre District (one of the best in the country). For nightlife, grab your friends or date and start the night at the new POST HTX. You can catch the sunset with a beautiful downtown skyline view from the rooftop and then head downstairs to the food hall (this is the first spot I take my friends when they visit). Then, head to Main Street to enjoy dancing and drinks at bars like High & Dry Rum Bar and Dean’s Bar.

If you love art murals, head to Graffiti Park in East Downtown. This neighborhood celebrates art and music. Some of my top spots are Truck Yard Bar with a ferris wheel!

    Midtown – best nightlife

This neighborhood next to downtown is best known for Houston’s best bars and nightlife scene. Clubs and bars are within walking distance, making it the perfect place for a fun night out with friends (My friends and I definitely partied here during college). I recommend starting the night at Electric Feel Good Bar with frozen drinks and a fun slide!

    Montrose – coffee & art
Near Midtown you’ll find Montrose. In this cool and artsy neighborhood you can shop at vintage stores like the Leopard Lounge, view murals, hang out at coffee shops like Agora and Common Bond Bakery and even watch a drag show. The Menil Collection and Rothko Chapel art galleries are located in this neighborhood as well. They are across from each other and offer free admission!

    Museum District / Rice Village – artsy & family-friendly
With over 18 museums, lush gardens and streets lined with live oak trees (similar to Savannah, Georgia), the Museum district is one of my favorite neighborhoods! View incredible art at the Museum of Fine Arts, see dinosaur fossils at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and play at the Children’s Museum. You can also spend a day at the Houston Zoo and then take a train ride or pedal boat ride around Hermann Park. End with a walk around the free Japanese Garden and McGovern Centennial Gardens nearby. Tip: Most museums are free on Thursdays (times vary). Visit their website for more information. Also, make sure to drive through Rice University to see the beautiful architecture and a hidden gem that lights up at night: James Turrell’s “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace!

The Heights – cool bars & antique shops
This beautiful residential neighborhood is decorated with live oak trees, historic Victorian-style homes, antique shops, cool bars and restaurants. Visit 19th Street to see an early 1900’s movie theater and shop along the street for antiques, retro discs, home decor and more. My favorite store is Casa Ramirez with Mexican folk art and handmade artifacts. At night, head to Wicklow Heights for a cold drink then bar hop!

Northside – best authentic mexican food
With a large Mexican community, the northside of Houston is where you can find authentic Mexican restaurants, shops and places to learn about the culture. Start your day by visiting El Bolillo Bakery for a pan dulce and freshly-baked bread heaven. You can also spend time shopping at the historical Houston Farmers Market across the street (I also recommend Azteca Farmers Market on the east side of town). Then, taste THE BEST Mexican street tacos at El Taconazo Taco Truck. It’s cash only and there may be a line, but I promise it is worth it! My family has been enjoying this place for 20 years. Want to try Mexican candy? Visit Las Delicias Mexicanas and feel like a kid in a candy store.

River Oaks / Upper Kirby – upscale dining & living
Home to the River Oaks Country Club, River Oaks is an upscale residential area with lush greenery and multi-million dollar homes. It is mostly visited by locals and visitors during the holiday season where one can drive around the neighborhood and see the mansions decorated in festive holiday lights. For shopping and fine dining, you can visit the upscale River Oaks District with brands like Cartier and restaurants like Toulouse Cafe and MAD for Spanish tapas. We also can’t forget about the new chic brunch spots: Little Hen and Ojo de Agua (y’all loved this one on my Instagram)!

Galleria / Uptown – best for shopping
If you like to shop til you drop, this is the spot for you! The Galleria Mall is a large 3-story mall with an ice-rink, shops like Express, Zara and luxury brands like Prada and Gucci. You can also shop at the nearby Highland Village Shopping Center with stores like Crate & Barrel, Lululemon and Sephora. For an outdoor activity, you must visit the iconic Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park. You can see 11,000 gallons of water fall down a 64-foot semi-circular water wall – If you stand in the middle, it feels like the ground is moving!

Memorial / Washington – Best for Parks & Outdoor Activities
If you love to bike, hike and run, visit Memorial Park with some of the largest green areas and trails in the city! You can start your hike near the Eastern Glades or just drive through the new large grass-covered tunnels at Memorial Park. It’s the perfect place to go for a walk with friends, family or pets. On Washington Avenue, you’ll find plenty of fun bars and clubs to visit with friends like Kung Fu Saloon (arcade games), Sugar Room (hidden door) and the new Bayou Heights Bier Garten (with a coffee bar and food)!

Medical Center / NRG – best for health care & sports
The Texas Medical Center is the world’s largest medical center with over 160,000 employees learning, practicing and researching cures for illnesses like cancer. This network of hospitals and universities is so large that it has its own skyline! Be on the lookout for the two buildings that look like syringes. NRG Stadium, the Texans Football team’s stadium is nearby and offers the best game and concert experience with a retractable roof (the one Lady Gaga jumped from during her super bowl halftime performance). This 72,000+ seat stadium is also home to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, making it the largest rodeo in the world! In addition to a weeks-long concert lineup with top country and pop artists, there’s a fun carnival for locals and visitors to enjoy. It’s a great bachelorette trip idea too- ‘Let’s go girls’ theme?

    Asiatown / Chinatown
Houston’s Chinatown was first in downtown and later moved to the southwest part of the city. Asiatown began in the 1980’s and has grown so much over the years with great shops, restaurants and businesses to explore! Some of my favorite places to visit are Bellaire Food Street, East Wall Restaurant (China), Handam BBQ(Korea), Ellicor (candy & gift shop), Saigon Arts Matcha Cafe (Japan) and Sweet Memes (dessert). If you’re wanting to cook an authentic Asian meal, visit The Hong Kong Mall and H-Mart with the best Asian ingredients!

    The Six Wards – historical
After the proclamation for freedom of slaves in Texas occurred in Galveston on June 19, 1865 (Juneteenth), many freed slaves settled in the six wards in Houston. Now, Houstonians continue to keep its history and culture present by preserving areas like the Bethel Church Historic Site and events like Freedmen’s Town Walking Tours in Fourth Ward. Located in Third Ward, Texas Southern University is one of the country’s largest historically black universities (HBCUs). Also in Third Ward, is the top ranking University of Houston – Go Coogs!

Greater Houston – suburbs & NASA
Houston’s many growing suburbs include Katy, Cypress, Sugar Land, Pearland and Clear Lake. Each also have great restaurants and things to do. If you travel down I-45 South, you’ll find the world-renowned NASA Johnson Space Center! You can easily spend 3 hours here. Here’s my guide on How to Plan a Visit to Space Center Houston.

Want more Things to do in Houston? Here are 17 Things to Do in Houston!

    TASTE

As the Culture and Culinary Capital of the South, Houston has so many talented chefs including James Beard Foundation Award winners Hugo Ortega, Chris Shepherd and Justin Yu. All contribute to the diverse culinary scene in the city. The city is so diverse that you can taste dishes from Mexico, Africa, Vietnam, Japan, Colombia, Peru and Nepal for any meal of the day!

Start your morning at one of the city’s best coffee shops: Brass Tacks in East Downtown has the best food, coffee and plants for purchase. Giant Leap Coffee is a space-themed coffee shop near The Galleria and it is great for a grab & go option. Common Bond Brasserie & Bakery has multiple locations and is perfect for a coffee and pastry run! See my Common Bond Spring Location review.

For Breakfast & Brunch in Houston, I definitely recommend Traveler’s Table with different food from around the world and cocktail flights to share. If you love hearty brunch dishes like Country Fried Steak and “Fruity Pebbles” French Toast paired with whiskey, visit Bosscat. Dine at Hugo’s Mexican Restaurant for brunch favorites like chilaquiles and margaritas (and brunch buffet on Sundays)!

I suggest trying one of the many food halls in the city for lunch like POST, Bravery Chef Hall, Understory and Finn Hall with a great variety of dishes. A trip to Texas isn’t complete without tasting BBQ! Truth BBQ and Feges BBQ are both delicious options offering modern twists to the traditional ribs, brisket and sides – perfect for lunchtime!

For dinner, I love recommending restaurants for date night, birthdays or a special occasion–there are so many in town! Right now, my husband and I love Marmo for modern Italian (the half size Squid Ink Campanelle Pasta is a must!). Indianola is a great option for New American cuisine with excellent service, comfy pink dining booths and it is connected to a fun bar, Miss Carousel. If you want to try authentic Mexican dishes, visit Chef Hugo Ortega’s Xochi or Caracol for amazing Oaxacan mole, ceviche and more!

    STAY

Whether you’re looking for a nice place to stay during your visit to Houston or in need of a staycation, here are my top favorite hotels in Houston. In downtown, you’ll want to stay at the Marriott Marquis Houston to enjoy their Texas-shaped pool and lazy river! If you’re catching an Astros game, stay at the nearby Le Méridien and enjoy drinks on their rooftop bar before or after the game.

Treat yourself to a luxury stay at the 5-Star Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston (named 2023 Best City Hotel by Travel & Leisure and awarded a Michelin One Key in 2024!), Four Seasons or The St. Regis Houston–you’ll love them all!

If you love boutique-style hotels with attention to detail, unique and intimate decor, I recommend staying at Hotel ZaZa in the Museum District and book one of their 12 themed suites like Houston we have a Problem (space themed suite) and SoHo Loft (New York themed suite). It was also awarded a Michelin One Key recently! The C. Baldwin is another great option especially for a girls trip. It’s named after the “mother of Houston”, Charlotte Baldwin. She was the wife of one of the founders of Houston and helped finance the founding of the city (it was unknown for years since back then women couldn’t sign off on financial documents). The hotel has women-empowerment murals, pink decor and a chic restaurant to enjoy a fun girls night out! Other favorites are Le Meridien Houston Downtown.

I have saved my favorite hotels on my Plannin Profile. You can save up to 40% off Houston hotels & hotels worldwide when you sign up for a free Plannin account using this link!

    STYLE

Wear casual clothes like shorts, t-shirts, jeans, baseball caps and tennis shoes for exploring Houston. In the colder months November – March, wear warm clothes like puffer jackets, cozy sweaters and rain boots. For upscale dinners and fun nightlife, feel free to dress up!
Don’t forget your cowboy boots and hat for the rodeo in late February and March (it’s pretty much the only time you’ll see the whole city dressed in western gear).

    TRAVEL

When planning a trip to Houston, note: there are two major airports, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) on the north side and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) on the south side. Hobby is perfect to fly into if you’re flying domestically. It’s much smaller than Bush Airport and can save you time during check in.

How to Get Around Houston: I recommend renting a car or using Uber. Just remember that the city is huge so Uber might cost $35+ one way from one side of town to the other. There are 3 major highway loops in the city, 610 Loop (inner loop), Beltway 8 (Toll) and Highway 6 (outer loop). When finding things to do, most locals and visitors explore within the inner loop (inside 610 Loop).

Best times to visit: February/March while the rodeo is in town (chilly to mild weather), April/May for baseball season and outdoor activities (spring weather), September-November for outdoor activities (breezy and nice weather). Try to visit museums or indoor spots during the summer since it can get above 100 degrees!

  • 5 HOUSTON NONPROFITS YOU’LL LOVE TO SUPPORT

    May 3, 2023 by admin

Now more than ever, non-profits are needing volunteers and or donations to help provide meals, resources and shelter for the local community. Here are 5 Houston non-profit organizations that I have supported throughout the years that offer great resources for our community of all ages. If you are able, please join me in helping our fellow Houstonians!

Houston Food Bank is a member of Feeding America and is a non-profit that receives meals and food items from local farmers, grocery stores and food drives. Their staff and volunteers are critical as they help inspect and distribute food items to many community centers and even churches which assist with providing meals to more than 800,000 people annually. During the COVID-19 crisis, The Houston Food Bank has partnered with Houston ISD to distribute meals to Houstonians in various locations throughout the city. The Houston Food Bank also offers great resources like job training and nutrition education. Any support helps. Even $1 can provide three meals!

Kids’ Meals, Inc is a non-profit that delivers meals to preschool-aged children who live in under-served communities. It is also the nation’s only home delivery service for preschool kids. You can help by volunteering and or donating any amount ($2 will feed a child). You can also get your family and friends to support by participating in the DIY Lunch Pack program where you can draw and decorate a paper bag and include a protein, a snack and a drink (Kids Meals, Inc can add a sandwich) for a child in need. Lunch bags can be dropped off at the address below.

Meals on Wheels is a program within the Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (a United Way agency) that delivers about 4,000 meals to home-bound seniors and disabled adults per week. Due to COVID-19, “Meals on Wheels is altering its delivery methods to ensure the safety of our seniors- delivering a week’s worth of frozen meals at a time to reduce contact, while phoning each senior regularly to check on them and provide social support”. In addition to the affects of COVID-19, staff is preparing for hurricane season (June 1st – November 30th) to provide emergency food. $14 can help support one senior with emergency food.

The Beacon is a non-profit that helps the homeless community in Houston (helped 8,500+ individuals last year) by providing counseling, legal assistance, housing and meals. Due to COVID-19, hours of operations have been updated, but The Beacon continues to provide ‘Take-away meals’ seven days a week. With the help of volunteers, they are able to provide individuals with a Take-away meal which includes one hot meal and one sack lunch. Any donation can reach the organization’s mission of a better future for the members of this community.

Their Black Tie Gala on January 14, 2023 is their largest fundraising event of the year! The gala will feature an exceptional performance by Will Fortune, the St. Andrew Youth and Young Adult Orchestra, more musical guests, delicious food and a great time. • 5 BREWERIES IN HOUSTON YOU NEED TO VISIT

    May 3, 2023 by admin

It’s heating up in Houston and sometimes, there’s no better way to beat the heat than with an ice cold beer (or two) right? With the rise of craft beer in the last few years, you better believe that Houston has some great craft breweries to visit. Here are 5 local craft breweries with all the IPA’s, blondes, pale ales, sours and more! Enjoy & please drink responsibly.

Karbach Brewing Company is a craft brewery that started in 2011 and offers a variety of beers like Wheat, IPA, Pale Ale and my favorite: Blonde, Love Street. Karbach Brewery also offers a restaurant with delicious options like their Cake & Bacon Bakery Pretzel and Karbach Burger – and we can’t forget the good times in the biergarten with live music!

Saint Arnold Brewing Company is Texas’ oldest craft brewery that began brewing in 1994! This brewery offers year round beer like the popular Art Car IPA (inspired by Houston’s annual parade, The Art Car Parade) and Lawnmower, seasonal beer like my favorite: Oktoberfest and beer series like the Bishop’s Barrel Series of barrel aged beers. For many years, the brewery has offered fun brewery tours. A few years ago, they added a restaurant and beer garden perfect to hang out with friends and checking out the displayed Art Cars all while overlooking the downtown Houston skyline!

Eureka Heights Brewery is located above the Eureka Heights fault system in Houston, hence the cool name. This brewery offers beers with lower ABV% so that you can fully taste the flavors. One of my favorites is the Buckle Bunny (Cream Ale).  There is plenty of seating with picnic tables for you and your friends to enjoy!
    Phone: 832-953-4677

Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company began in 2011 and most recently opened their three story building with a restaurant and a view of the downtown skyline! It is considered Houston’s most creative brewery as they have created various unique beers like minty stouts, pink beers, but also my favorite: Great White Buffalo (Witbier). I first tasted this beer when I joined the BON Running Club in Rice Village (3-mile run around Rice University Campus on Tuesdays, a beer token is given at Little Woodrow’s afterwards).

  • HOW TO MAKE CREAMY CHICKEN PESTO PASTA

    February 3, 2021 by admin

Ever get that pasta craving? All the time? Yea, me too! Although, my husband and I don’t eat pasta everyday like we would love to, the times we do have pasta, we make sure it’s worth every carb. So, I got inspired to make a pasta dish that would be incredibly delicious, creamy and would satisfy that pasta craving – this Creamy Chicken Pesto Pasta does that! My husband loves it so much he said to add this to the top of my recipes list! Hope you enjoy as well.

    Ingredients

Your choice of Fettuccine or Spaghetti Noodles

1 tablespoon of Salt (for pasta water)

    1 tablespoon of Pepper

3 tablespoons of Rosemary Garlic Seasoning

    1 tablespoon of Olive Oil

    2 tablespoons of butter (unsalted)

    4 Cloves of Garlic (chopped)

    1 Small Broccoli Head (chopped)

1/2 cup of halved Cherry Tomatoes

1 pound of Boneless and Skinless Chicken Breast Tenders

    1/4 cup of Chicken Stock

1/2 cup of Pesto (store bought or homemade)

3/4 cup of Heavy Whipping Cream

    1 cup of Parmesan (grated)

    Serves: 2-3 people

    Instructions

    1. Pasta & Broccoli: Bring water to boil in a pot and then add your pasta with the salt. After about 2 minutes, add broccoli to the pot. Choose your pasta done at al dente or softer.

    2. Chicken: Season chicken tenders with pepper and rosemary garlic seasoning. Heat olive oil in a large pan on medium low heat for about 1 minute before adding the chicken breasts. Sear each side for 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove chicken when cooked and set aside on a separate plate.

    3. Creamy Pesto Sauce: After you’ve set the chicken aside, add garlic and cook for about 1 minute or until golden brown. Once golden, add the heavy whipping cream. Then, add chicken stock and pesto to mix all ingredients.

    4. Add boiled pasta and broccoli to the sauce and toss to fully coat. Then place chicken tenders over pasta. Finish by adding tomatoes, parmesan cheese, salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!

I hope you and your family love this recipe as much as I do! Make sure to post pictures of your meal and tag me on Instagram @atastefultrip – I’d love to see!

  • HOW TO PLAN A VISIT TO SPACE CENTER HOUSTON: NOW OPEN WITH NEW SAFETY MEASURES

    August 21, 2020 by admin

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Houston, Texas? NASA! Growing up in Houston, I loved visiting Space Center Houston and learning something new about space exploration each time I visited.

That is why I am excited to share my collaboration with the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian Affiliate, Space Center Houston to show you how to plan a fun, educational and safe visit!

    About Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston is a project of the 501(c)(3) Manned Space Flight Education Foundation and is more than just a Houston attraction. It is a 250,000 square feet museum (perfect for social distancing) with exciting exhibits and more than 400 space artifacts! The center also offers a variety of education programs, virtual and in person to inspire the next generation to choose careers in STEM. Does your child love NASA? Youth ages 11-18, adults and educators can attend Space Center University! The center now has a new Space Center University Clean Room experience to learn how NASA is the leader in crew safety, health and sanitation. Just imagine the high level of sanitation needed to send astronauts into space! Learn more about education programs here. You can also support these programs and the nonprofit’s mission here.

Fun fact for Disney fans: Disney Imagineers helped design the layout for the center!

Where is Space Center Houston located?

Space Center Houston is located about 30 min (28.5 miles) from downtown Houston at 1601 NASA Pkwy, Houston, Texas, 77058. From downtown, you can head down I-45 South and exit NASA Road 1 and turn left to follow signs to the center. Parking is free for now. Visit spacecenter.org for updates.

What to Know Before You Go

You can safely experience new exhibits, new live shows and outdoor activities at Space Center Houston thanks to the center following state, local and CDC guidelines regarding COVID-19. Since the center’s reopening in July 2020, there is an increase in safety and sanitation that I noticed on my recent visit like social distancing markers on the ground (shaped like spacesuit foot prints), hand sanitizers throughout and a touch-less entry to ensure each guest feels safe. I will be sharing all about my recent visit to the center in this post. But first, here’s what I highly recommend to do for an enjoyable visit:

    • Read the Know Before You Go Guide for reopening procedures like the new timed admission tickets, face mask requirement, what size of bags allowed, water bottles allowed and more!
    • Purchase your advance timed tickets here.

    Child (ages 3 & younger) Free, Kid (ages 4-11) $24.95, Adult (ages 12 & older) $29.95, Senior (ages 65 & older) $27.95.

    • Download the FREE Space Center Houston app here. Trust me, you’ll need this to fully experience all there is to offer, including reserving your Tram Tour seats as shown below. Plus there are augmented reality features!
What to see in Space Center Houston?

I recently visited the center on a Saturday in August 2020. We arrived at 10 am right when the center opened (Hours of Operation: 10 am – 5 pm). The recommended time to spend there is 2-3 hours, but you can easily spend up to 6 hours like we did. There is just so much to do! When we arrived, we put on our NASA-themed masks and immediately noticed the new tent with a welcome concierge desk, a small line with social distancing markers and hand sanitizer dispensers handy. Once we made it through the bag check line, there was a cool family photo op in front of a green screen with a space-themed background available for purchase!

    Exhibits, Activities & Experiences

Once we went through the touchless entry, we were greeted by space music, space artifacts suspended from the ceiling and the NASA Lunar Rover which is another great photo op!

Apollo 13: Failure is not an option

One of the newest exhibits at Space Center Houston is the Apollo 13: Failure is Not an Option exhibit. Although Apollo 13 did not land on the moon due to a malfunction, flight controllers were able to create new procedures to successfully rescue the crew. This exhibit is available July 19th – December 31st.

    Destiny Theater

In previous years, I would have recommended to start your visit with the Tram Tour since the lines get longer throughout the day, but with the limited capacity, we felt at ease to sit down and watch the historic film “Human Destiny” which shows NASA’s space journey from the beginning of the space race to the moon landing and more – pretty awesome to see on the big screen. Fun fact: The podium displayed in this theater was used by President John F. Kennedy at Rice University in Houston, Texas during his historic speech informing Americans why we must explore the moon!

    Starship Gallery

Starship Gallery is one of the coolest galleries at Space Center Houston. We saw so many different space artifacts that have flown in space! One of my favorites was the Gemini V that floated above us as we walked into the gallery. The Gemini V (Gemini, also meaning “twins” in Greek) was designed to have 2 crew members and is recognized for its duration of 8 days to land on the moon and travel back. You can safely explore this gallery with the new one-way path to see the Skylab 1-G Trainer Module for America’s first space station, the Lunar Roving Trainer, lunar rocks and more!

    Independence Plaza

Once we walked through the Starship Gallery, we followed the path to enter the large outdoor space where the 159-ton NASA 905 plane and the 80-ton shuttle replica Independence are. Make sure to take the elevator or stairs up to enter the plane and the shuttle during your visit – you’ll love the views and exhibits in both!

    SpaceX Falcon 9 Booster Exhibit

One of the newest and exciting exhibits at Space Center Houston is outdoor next to the Independence Plaza and displays the massive SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The Falcon 9 is elevated 14 feet so we could easily walk under it and admire the length and scorch marks on the first commercial space exhibit at the center. This exhibit is a big deal because SpaceX has now proven that they can launch, land and reuse a rocket which is the future of space travel!

    Gift Shop

After reserving our seats for the Tram Tour on the Free Space Center Houston App, we decided to browse through the gift shop for some new NASA merchandise and astronaut ice cream! I do recommend visiting the gift shop during the earlier part of the day to avoid waiting in line due to limited capacity.

    NASA Tram Tour

This tour normally takes visitors to the Mission Control Center, but it is currently only going to Rocket Park to view the massive Saturn V Rocket – which is still pretty cool. The Saturn V is impressive because it is the heaviest, tallest and most powerful rocket that has been flown! We learned more about this rocket with the help of the augmented reality on the Space Center Houston app. The Tram Tour is definitely something you can’t miss during your visit!

    Zero-G Diner

After the Tram Tour, we took a lunch break at the Zero-G Diner to fuel up (see what I did there?) for some more space exploration. As a reminder, water bottles are allowed so I brought a cute NASA water bottle. Light snacks, sandwiches and vending machines are available for a quick break.

    Astronaut Gallery

When we walked into this gallery, there was an astronaut on stage answering questions from the audience (whose seats were spaced out)! After the Meet an Astronaut series, we walked through the gallery to see the incredible collection of spacesuits worn by the men and women of space exploration. Two suits that stood out to me were Judy Resnik’s T-38 flight suit and Sally Ride’s Shuttle Inflight Coveralls. Judy Resnik was part of NASA’s first astronaut class that included women. Unfortunately, this is the last suit she wore before the tragic loss of the crew aboard the Challenger. Sally K. Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983 and these overalls commemorate her dedication to space exploration and her motivation to inspire young girls to pursue careers in STEM. NASA continues to support women in space such as creating different garments for women like radiation vests to protect their bodies in harsh environments.

  • COMMON BOND BISTRO & BAKERY REVIEW: SPRING LOCATION

    August 20, 2020 by admin

Common Bond Bistro & Bakery opened its doors in Houston’s Montrose area back in 2014 and has been a neighborhood favorite for French-style pastries and delicious coffee (their lavender latte is my favorite!) ever since. Now, the bakery offers delicious savory dishes by Savory Chef, Jason Gould and has expanded to more neighborhoods! Their newest location is at CityPlace in Springwoods Village in Spring, Texas. It is actually the only Common Bond location with a full bar and lounge!

Here’s a review of the savory dishes that I tasted on my recent visit to the Spring location hosted by Common Bond Bistro & Bakery. I know you’ll love these dishes as much as I do!

I put on a face mask and visited the Spring location on a weekday in the afternoon and was happy to see free parking, outdoor patio and friendly staff members when I arrived. They also have social distancing measures in place like QR codes for virtual menus, paper menus to throw away after one use, less than 30% seating capacity and 6 feet apart (or 3 French baguettes) markers that I thought were pretty funny and clever!

    Savory Dishes

    Specialty

    Shrimp & Grits
Includes: blackened gulf shrimp, cheese grits, creole sauce, cherry tomatoes, apple-wood smoked bacon, herb salad

Wow – this dish! I immediately smelled the creole sauce and the freshness of the gulf shrimp as soon as Chef Jason Gould placed the plate on the table. The cheese grits were creamy and blended well with the herbs and acidity of the tomatoes. I was already a fan and then I tasted the bacon! It’s no wonder this dish is served all day, it’s definite a crowd favorite.

    Sandwiches

    Croque-Madame
Includes: jambon de paris, gruyère, swiss, jalapeño béchamel, 63° egg (soft yolk), classic white bread

You’ll feel fancy like you’re dining in France when you taste this traditional French brasserie bistro sandwich! This sandwich has an egg and melted cheese on top of thick sliced bread. I definitely enjoyed breaking the egg yolk and watching it ooze down the side of the sandwich. I could hear a crunch as soon as I cut into the sandwich! My favorite part was how well the jalapeño béchamel mixed with the jam and cheese!

    Nashville Hot Chicken
Includes: spicy crisp chicken breast, brussels sprouts slaw, garlic aioli, pain de mie bun

You may remember me sharing my love for this sandwich when I mentioned on my instagram that I ordered it for brunch two weekends in a row last year. I am happy to report that it is still crispy, spicy and the slaw with brussel sprouts adds more crunch!

    Shareables

    Grilled Cheese Bites (vegetarian)
Includes: gruyère, swiss, raclette cheese, sprouted sourdough, tomato relish

These grilled cheese bites are so good! I enjoyed dipping them in the fresh tomato relish, it added great flavor. I also loved the crunch in each bite. I definitely recommend as a shareable item!

    Flatbread

    Wild Mushroom & Goat Cheese
Includes: forest mushrooms, brie, mozzarella, goat cheese, balsamic onions, truffle oil

This flatbread is so delicious! The goat cheese taste stands out without being overwhelming, the balsamic onions add a little bit of sweetness and the texture of the mushrooms blends everything together. You’ll want to try this too!

    Full Bar & Lounge

The bar area is inviting with pink velvet bar chairs and neon colors behind the bar. I tasted the Mezcal Mule and it was refreshing! I prefer drinks that are more bitter than sweet, so this was perfect, but they also offer a variety of drinks on their bar menu like Frosé.

You already love their pastries, now you’ll love their savory dishes! Be sure to visit this location or one near you and tag Common Bond Bistro & Bakery and A Tasteful Trip on Instagram. Thank you to Chef Jason Gould and the awesome staff at Common Bond for hosting my visit.

  • HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT PICNIC IN HOUSTON

    July 17, 2020 by admin

Picnics are more popular now since it is the perfect way to social distance while getting some fresh air. Houston summers can be harsh, but with the right timing, the weather can be nice during your picnic. Here’s how I recently brought out my event planning skills and planned a picnic date for my cousin and her boyfriend that turned out so dreamy!

        1. Choose a color scheme or theme for your picnic.

In this case, we wanted it to be romantic colors like pink, white and black.

        2. Choose a Houston park, date & time.

We chose Eleanor Tinsley Park for the skyline view of downtown Houston on a Friday evening at Sunset so that it wouldn’t be as hot and when most people typically leave the park. You can also choose another park from my list of Houston parks to visit.

Note: There is metered parking at this location on Allen Parkway.

       3. Select vendors & purchase any products necessary.

Some items we already had and others we purchased like the most beautiful charcuterie  box from a Houston local vendor, Bliss Box & Boards and the delicious dinner from one of Houston’s top Italian restaurants, Coltivare in the Heights.

Down below I have listed the items purchased or some that are similar to recreate this picnic look – enjoy!

  • HOPDODDY PARMESAN TRUFFLE FRIES

    July 13, 2020 by admin

Today is National French Fry Day! If you didn’t know, fries are my weakness right after burgers. It can be hard to find a restaurant that offers fries that are as equally delicious as the burgers, but I am so glad I tasted Hopdoddy’s juicy burgers and parmesan truffle fries for the first time back in 2013! Both are pretty popular, but here is a quick recipe of their parmesan truffle fries to taste at home – enjoy!

    Ingredients

    1 Tablespoon of Truffle Oil

    1/3 Cup of Grated Parmesan

    2 Tablespoons of Chives

1 Bag of Frozen French Fries

    Serves: 2-3 people

    Instructions

    1. Start off by adding 1/2 of the fries into the air fryer (I have the Ninja Air Fryer that I purchased at Target) at 350 Degrees Fahrenheit for 12 minutes or more depending on your liking.

    2. Next, in a small bowl, mix Parmesan and the chives.

    3. Remove fries from air fryer and add to a mixing bowl.

    4. Sprinkle the parmesan chives on the fries.

    5. Then, take your truffle oil (I could only find with artificial flavor at Walmart) and add to the mixing bowl.

    6. Toss all ingredients to coat the fries

    7. Lastly, repeat the steps with the other half of fries or save for later!

    A Tasteful Tip

Truffle oil has a strong taste. A small portion goes a long way!

Thank you for reading. I hope you taste these delicious fries!

  • HOW TO RE-ORGANIZE YOUR SPICES

    July 11, 2020 by admin

If you’ve been looking for a sign to re-organize your spices like the ones you see on Pinterest, here it is! I recently moved and I knew that I wanted to ‘spice’ up my kitchen decor.

Here’s how to re-organize your spices with these chic glass jars and labels.

Step 1 – Order Spice Glass Jars

First, I made a list of how many spices I had plus the ones I needed to buy (you better believe I added Tajín) and I ordered the 36 pcs from amazon.

The package includes Shaker Lids, Metal Caps, 2 kinds of Waterproof Spice Jar Labels, a funnel and a white chalk marker! Basically, this package has everything you need unless you prefer a specific font for your lables (see Step 2). There are pieces of 14, 24 or 36.

Step 2 – Order spice labels from Etsy

I ordered the Modern Spice Labels from PaperAndPearStore on Etsy. This shop offers a variety of labels. If you like the tall labels, select the following dimensions:

    Content: Custom Labels

    Style: 2.25t x 1.25w White

I also wanted all the labels in alphabetical and numerical order. So, I listed all my spices on a Word document and sorted by alphabetical order and added the list in the notes section of my label order.

Step 3 – Transfer spices to the new jars

That’s it. Enjoy your newly organized spice drawer or pantry!

                                                                                                Before

                                                                                                    After

Have you ordered your new spice jars and labels yet?

Everyone loves a good salsa or dip, right? You’ll love this tasty and healthy 9-ingredient salsa that can also be a dip! This pairs well with tortilla chips and a refreshing margarita poolside on a hot Texas day.

    1 Ripe Mango
    1/2 Cup of Chopped Cilantro

Serves: 4-6 people (also depends, because it’s so good that I can definitely finish this on my own)

    Instructions
    1. Start off by adding the rinsed black beans and rinsed corn into a mixing bowl.

    2. Then, add diced red onion and diced tomato

    3. Add chopped avocado and chopped mango

    4. Finely chop cilantro and add it into the bowl

    5. Cut lime and add fresh lime juice

  • 10 HOUSTON PARKS FOR HIKING AND BIKING

    May 14, 2020 by admin

In these crazy times, it is important to take time to clear our minds and go get some fresh air. Lucky for us Houstonians, our city ranks numero uno in the nation’s list of populous cities with total acreage of parkland! Here are some parks to enjoy.

*Please use caution and follow CDC safety recommendations.

    Downtown

    • Discovery Green Park is an 11.78-acre park in the heart of downtown Houston in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center and is filled with the most colorful gardens and different art installations. This park is great to have a picnic with the family, take a nice stroll or enjoy one of their many events throughout the year (hopefully soon)!
Location: 1500 McKinney St, Houston, TX 77010
      Dog-Friendly: Yes

    • Tranquillity Park expands 2 city blocks in downtown Houston near City Hall and offers tranquil shady areas to get some fresh air. Fun fact: this park was named after the Sea of Tranquility where the first landing on the moon occurred during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. The uneven grassy areas and the pool represents the cratered lunar surface!
Location: 400 Rusk St, Houston, TX 77002
      Dog-Friendly: Yes

    • Buffalo Bayou Park offers 4+ miles of winding paved hiking and biking trails and is a favorite among the locals due to the unforgettable views of the downtown skyline, the bayou and inspirational art installations such as the Cistern – underground art display.
Location: 1800 Allen Pkwy &, Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77019 (Parking is available when you come from downtown on Bagby St towards Allen Parkway)
      Dog-Friendly: Yes

    • Eleanor Tinsley Park is a park within the Buffalo Bayou Park and is named after Eleanor Tinsley who was a member of the Houston City Council for many years. This park is great for picnics, exercising and offers a great view of the downtown Houston skyline.
Location: 18-3600 Allen Pkwy, Houston, TX 77019 (Parking is available when you come from downtown on Bagby St towards Allen Parkway)
      Dog-Friendly: Yes

    Museum District

    • Hermann Park offers about 2 miles of running and biking trails and is centered between Houston’s Museum District and the Texas Medical Center. There is also the beautiful McGovern Centennial Gardens where you will find a swirl-like path of greenery. As a kid, I would look forward to going to the Houston Zoo because it meant ending the day riding the train around the park and rolling down the hill at Miller Outdoor Theater. Now as an adult, I run at Hermann Park or join the free BON Running Club nearby on Tuesdays for a 3-mile run around the gorgeous oak tree-filled Rice University campus.
Location: 6001 Fannin St, Houston, TX 77030
      Dog-Friendly: Yes

    Memorial Area

    • Memorial Park has 10+ miles for walking and biking and is near the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center making it one of the most popular parks in Houston. And can we talk about how this park turns 96 years old this year? Crazy. Before 1924, this was the site for Camp Logan, a U.S. Army training camp and was later dedicated as a memorial park in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives in World War I.
Location: 6501 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77007. West of Downtown, bounded by I-10, West Loop 610, Crestwood, and Buffalo Bayou
      Dog-Friendly: Yes

    Galleria Area

    • Gerald D. Hines Water Park has 2.77 acres of greenery and is home to the 64-foot crescent-shaped water wall that circulates 11,000 gallons of water per minute! This Houston staple is great to take photos in the inner wall as the water cascades down (if you stand in the middle and look at the water wall, it will feel like the ground is moving upwards)!
Location: 2800 Post Oak Blvd, Houston, TX 77056
      Dog-Friendly: Yes

    West Houston

    • Terry Hershey Park West Houston is one of my favorites for running as it offers 12.2 miles of Hike and Bike Trails. During college, I would take a study break and run on the Blue Jay Trail and the Cardinal Trail since they offer a gazebo, hills and wooden bridges – I love a good scenery. For biking, I suggest the Quail Trail as it is paved and expands from Eldridge Parkway to just before Beltway 8!
Location: 15200 Memorial Dr, Houston, Texas 77079
      Dog-Friendly: Yes

    • Ray Miller Park West Houston offers a 0.64 mile trail as this park is located in a residential area and has a shady gazebo and water fountains to enjoy.
Location: 1800 Eldridge Pkwy, Houston, Texas 77077
      Dog-Friendly: No

    • George Bush Park West Houston has 10+ miles for hiking and biking and is located on the Barker Reservoir which lends itself to large areas to fly a kite (or in my case, attempt to fly a kite), play soccer and more!
Location: 16756 Westheimer Pkwy, Houston, Texas 77082
Dog-Friendly: Yes, there’s even a dog park, Millie Bush Dog Park named after President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush’s dog.
